Protecting the Anambas

Through Community Programmes and Initiatives

Founded in 2018, Bawah Anambas Foundation is an Indonesian Foundation focusing to address three main development challenges in the Anambas: Marine Conservation, Forest Conservation, and Community Development. The main goal for BAF is to improve the overall ecosystem in the Anambas, both underwater and terrestrial.

The Bawah Anambas Foundation (BAF) will help conserve and expand the biodiversity of The Anambas Islands. Our aim is to protect fish and coral around the barrier reef, as well as lift the community’s welfare.

The district of Anambas consists of more than 200 islands across 7 sub-districts with around 45,000 people. 75-80% of the community rely their livelihood heavily on the ocean. BAF is working closely with the local Anambas government as well as various stakeholders including NGOs, academic and research institutions, other private sector entities with the same ethos and objectives, and most importantly the community themselves.

A foundation to support the people of the Anambas

sustainable eco-awareness education

At Bawah Reserve, we recognise the need to positively contribute to the local community in which we operate by providing employment, economic opportunities, and sustainable eco-awareness education. We identify with the local culture, foster a strong relationship with the local community, and hold a deep respect for local traditions and customs. Furthermore, we pledge to protect the local community from cultural, economic and environmental exploitation.

As part of our eco-philosophy and in order to preserve and maintain the precious essence of Bawah Reserve, we want to make sure we give back to the community and our environment. We have therefore created an NGO, the Bawah Anambas Foundation, by bringing together a team of experts. Our Bawah Anambas Foundation is working on projects around coral reef preservation and restoration, turtle conservation, forest rehabilitation for Bawah, and solid waste management covering: education, collection, separation, and treatment. Check out the website and learn more about their current projects.
